Israel: Cvetkovic: District Court Allows Extradition to Face Genocide Charges

2011-08-01, Jerusalem, Israel. The District Court of Jerusalem authorized extradition of Aleksandar Cvetković to Bosnia and Herzegovina to face genocide charges. He now has 30 days to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Israel.

If extradited, he will be prosecuted before the War Crimes Section of the BiH Court in Sarajevo on charges arising from his alleged participation in the killings of Bosnian Muslims from Srebrenica on the Branjevo farm (Pilica, Zvornik municipality) in July 1995. During the war, the accused was a member of the 10th Reconnaissance Squad with the Main Headquarters of the Republika Srpska Army. The prosecution alleged that the accused personally participated in the killings and that he ”initiated the use of an M-84 machine-gun in order to speed up the killings”.

Mr. Cvetković immigrated to Israel in 2006, and obtained Israeli citizenship through his wife. He was arrested in Israel on January 17th, 2011.

He is represented by Nick Kaufman, a former Senior District Attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Jerusalem and a former prosecutor at the ICTY.
